IELTS Writing Task 2: double question

Why are some people resistant to adopting new technologies? What can be done to help people who struggle with technology in their daily lives?

The answer

A Band 7 essay.

Band 7292 words

New technology now affects almost every part of daily life, from paying bills to booking a doctor's appointment. However, a significant number of people still avoid it. In my view, the main causes are fear and a lack of clear benefits, and the best solution is patient, practical support.

The most common reason is fear of making mistakes. Many older people grew up without computers, so they see a technology as something that can easily go wrong. Everyone has heard stories about online frauds and stolen bank details, which makes older people even more careful. For instance, my father refuses to use his banking app because he believes one wrong click could empty his account.

Another reason is that some people simply do not see the point. A lot of new apps require time to learn, and for someone who is happy with the old method, the effort seems bigger than the reward. A small shop owner who has always been paid in cash, for example, may feel that card machines bring only extra costs and complications.

Several things could help these people. Local libraries could offer free classes in small groups, where learners can practice at their own speed without feeling embarrassed. Families matter too: since last year, my aunt has used online banking confidently because her son spent a few weekends showing her how it works. Finally, if companies designed simpler apps and kept a phone line for people who prefer a real voice, fewer users would feel left behind.

To conclude, most people who avoid new technology are either afraid of it or cannot see its value. Unfortunatly, the problem will not disappear on its own, but with patient teaching and better design, even nervous users can become confident.

Why this band

Band 7 essay, criterion by criterion.

Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the essay: the words each note quotes.

Task ResponseBand 7
Both questions get a full answer, and the writer's view is stated in the introduction. Each reason has an example, such as the writer's father and his banking app. The claim that "Everyone has heard stories" is a little too general.
Coherence and CohesionBand 7
Paragraphs follow a clear order: fear, then lack of benefit, then solutions. Linking is varied, for example For instance, Another reason and Finally.
Lexical ResourceBand 7
There are good topic phrases like "feel left behind" and "practical support". A few choices are less natural, such as "online frauds", and "Unfortunatly" is misspelled.
Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 7
The answer uses relative clauses, a passive and an if clause about an imagined situation. Errors are few, for example "a technology", where no article is needed.
One change

One change that makes this essay stronger.

Before

After

Help works best when it is patient and practical, and libraries, families and companies can each provide part of it.

The paragraph now opens with a clear idea that links back to the writer's view.
