02 / Your case

Using two tests: a worked example

This rule covers every National Board but one, from nursing and medicine to pharmacy, physiotherapy and psychology. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board has its own rule.

Ahpra lets you use up to two tests no more than 12 months apart. Each needs 7 overall, and no score in either can be below 6.5. Here is an example in our own numbers.

  • Test 1: Listening 8, Reading 7, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5. Overall 7.
  • Test 2: Listening 7.5, Reading 7, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7. Overall 7.
  • Together they meet the rule: 7 or more in Listening, Reading and Speaking, 6.5 in Writing, and nothing below 6.5.
  • If Test 2 had Writing 6, it would not count, even with an overall of 7.
03 / Why Writing

For Ahpra registration, Writing often holds the band back.

Writing is the one skill where Ahpra's minimum is 6.5, not 7, and in IELTS's own 2024-2025 Academic data it had the lowest average. IELTS test taker performance data, 2024-2025.

One Skill Retake: accepted. It does not count as an extra test, but with two tests all three must fall within 12 months.

04 / Your plan

A Writing plan for Ahpra registration.

  1. Set your target band.

Make your target band the Writing score your National Board asks for. For Ahpra, that is 6.5 in Writing. The rewrite then puts your own ideas at that band, so you can see what it takes.

  2. Write the tasks your test has.

Practice the two Academic tasks: a chart report for Task 1 and an essay for Task 2. Start the practice timer for each one.

  3. Fix your lowest criterion first.

Begin with the criterion that scores lowest and go through its labeled corrections. Compare your recent Task 1 and Task 2 bands before you book a first or a second test.

05 / What VoyaLang does

What VoyaLang does for Ahpra registration, and what it does not.

VoyaLang does
VoyaLang checks Academic Task 1 chart reports, Task 2 essays, including ones on a question of your own, and General Training letters of 11 types and 3 tones. Each one comes back with four criterion bands, each mistake corrected and labeled, and a rewrite at the band you aim for. Use the practice timer when you want it, and add your exam date to see a countdown.
VoyaLang does not
There is no official IELTS score here, and no single band for the Writing test as a whole. Listening, Reading and Speaking are not checked, and nor are tests such as OET or PTE. VoyaLang does not book your test, apply to Ahpra or your Board for you, or advise you on registration.
