Each part counts on its own

Your lowest part sets your level. In our own example, Listening 8, Reading 8, Speaking 8 and Writing 7.5 is Proficient (10 points), not Superior (20). English points are only one part of your total, and you cannot be invited with fewer than 65 points.

Partner points: if your partner also applies and has Competent English (6 in each part, Writing too), you get 5 points.
Partner points: 10 instead, if your partner was also under 45 and had a suitable skills assessment for an occupation on the same list as yours.
Otherwise, your partner can show Functional English: an IELTS average of at least 4.5 from a test in the 12 months before the visa application. Or you pay the second installment of the visa charge.
IT jobs: the ACS skills assessment needs no English test.

03 / Why Writing

For Australia PR, Writing often holds the band back.

Home Affairs takes both versions with the same scores, and in IELTS's own 2024-2025 data, Writing had the lowest average of the four skills in Academic and the second lowest in General Training, after Reading. IELTS test taker performance data, 2024-2025.

One Skill Retake: Home Affairs accepts it only for eligible visas, so check your visa page. The 482 page says it may accept it for tests from 13 September 2025.

04 / Your plan

A Writing plan for Australia PR.

Set your target band.
Your target should be the Writing band of the English level you aim for. For Proficient English, that is 7 in Writing; for Superior English, 8. The rewrite then shows what your own answer looks like at that level.
Write the tasks your test has.
Write the Task 1 of the version you book, an Academic chart report or a General Training letter, and Task 2 essays. Use the practice timer for each task.
Fix your lowest criterion first.
Your lowest part sets your English level, so in Writing begin with your lowest criterion and its labeled corrections. Compare the bands of your latest Task 1 and Task 2 answers before you book.

FAQ

Questions about IELTS for Australia PR.

Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training for Australia PR?

Either one. Home Affairs accepts both for Competent, Proficient and Superior English, with the same scores. In Writing, only Task 1 is different: a chart report in Academic, a letter in General Training. But your skills assessment body may ask for Academic only, as CPA Australia does.

Is IELTS Online accepted for Australian visas?

No. Home Affairs does not accept English tests taken fully online, at home or with an online supervisor, and it names IELTS Online. Book a test at a test center instead.

How long is IELTS valid for an Australian skilled visa?

Usually the test must be from the 3 years before you apply, but it depends on the visa. Results from tests on or before 6 August 2025 may be used until 6 August 2028, also depending on the visa.

Does my partner need IELTS for Australia PR?

Not always. A partner who also applies with Competent English, at least 6 in each part, can add 5 points. Otherwise your partner can show Functional English, an average of at least 4.5 from a test in the 12 months before you apply, or you pay the second installment of the visa charge.

How many points do I need for a 189 invitation?

At least 65. Home Affairs says you will not be invited with fewer. English gives 0 points for Competent, 10 for Proficient and 20 for Superior, so it is only one part of your total.

Can I use One Skill Retake for Australia PR?

Maybe. Home Affairs accepts One Skill Retake only for eligible visas and tells you to check your visa page. The 189, 190, 491 and 186 pages do not mention it, so ask before you book.
