02 / Your case

One set of scores, three different answers

Here is one set of scores in our own numbers: Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.5. The overall is 7.

  • GPhC (pharmacists): not enough. Every skill must be at least 7, Writing too.
  • GDC (dental): enough. The overall is 7 and every skill is 6.5 or more.
  • RCVS (vets): enough. Three skills are 7 or more, and one is 6.5.
  • With Writing 6 instead, none of the three would accept it.
  • Need a visa too? If your regulator accepted your English test, gov.uk says the Skilled Worker visa needs no new one for doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and vets, and the Health and Care Worker visa names the first four. Pharmacists are not named, so check the visa's English rule on gov.uk.

03 / Why Writing

For UK registration, Writing often holds the band back.

The GPhC, GDC and RCVS all name IELTS Academic, and in IELTS's own 2024-2025 Academic data, Writing had the lowest average of the four skills. IELTS test taker performance data, 2024-2025.

One Skill Retake: accepted by the GDC. The RCVS lets you retake single parts of the test. The GPhC does not mention it.

04 / Your plan

A Writing plan for UK registration.

  1. Set your target band.

Target the Writing score your regulator asks for. For the GPhC, that is 7 in Writing. The GDC accepts 6.5, and so does the RCVS if your other three skills are 7.0 or more. The rewrite then turns your own answer into one at your target.

  2. Write the tasks your test has.

Write both Academic tasks, a chart report for Task 1 and then an essay for Task 2, with the practice timer set for each.

  3. Fix your lowest criterion first.

Start with whichever criterion band is lowest, and use the labeled corrections to work on it. Before you book, put your recent Task 1 and Task 2 bands next to each other.

05 / What VoyaLang does

What VoyaLang does for UK registration, and what it does not.

VoyaLang does
It checks Academic Task 1 chart reports, Task 2 essays on a question you choose or type in, and General Training letters in 11 types and 3 tones. You see a band for each of the four criteria, every mistake fixed and labeled, and a rewrite at your target band. There is a practice timer if you want one, and a countdown to your exam date.
VoyaLang does not
It does not give an official IELTS score, or a single band for all of Writing. Listening, Reading and Speaking are outside it, and so are other English tests. It does not book your test, send your application to the GPhC, GDC or RCVS, or give registration advice.
FAQ

Questions about IELTS for UK registration.

What IELTS score does the GPhC need?

IELTS Academic with at least 7 overall and at least 7 in each of the four skills, all in one sitting. UKVI Academic is fine, but Life Skills is not. Scores older than 2 years may count if you can show you kept up your English.

Does the GDC accept IELTS Online?

Yes. The GDC says it accepts results from IELTS Online and from One Skill Retake. You still need 7 overall and at least 6.5 in each skill, on one test report form.

Can vets retake one part of IELTS for the RCVS?

Yes. The RCVS says you can retake individual parts of the test instead of the full test. You need 7.0 overall, at least 7.0 in three skills and at least 6.5 in the fourth.

Do I need another English test for my Health and Care Worker visa?

Not if you are a doctor, dentist, nurse or midwife and your regulator already accepted your English test. gov.uk names only these four jobs for this visa. Pharmacists and other roles should read the visa's English rule on gov.uk.

Is the GPhC changing its English rules?

It may. The GPhC is reviewing how pharmacists trained abroad join the register, and the draft still asks them to meet its English language requirements. Its consultation closed in July 2026, and there is no timetable for changes yet. Check its page before you book a test.
