Is IELTS Online accepted in your country?

IELTS Online is the same IELTS Academic test, taken on your own computer at home or in another private room. The Speaking test is a video call with an examiner, and results come 6 to 8 days after the test. For visas and immigration, IELTS tells you to keep taking your test at a test center.

  • Canada: not for Express Entry, which takes only General Training. The University of Toronto takes it for undergraduate programs.

03 / Why Writing

For IELTS Online test takers, Writing often holds the band back.

IELTS Online is the Academic test, and in IELTS's own 2024-2025 Academic data, Writing had the lowest average of the four skills. IELTS test taker performance data, 2024-2025.

One Skill Retake: IELTS offers it only after a full IELTS on computer test at a test center, so not after IELTS Online.

04 / Your plan

A Writing plan for IELTS Online test takers.

  1. Set your target band.

At home or at a test center, the band you need is the same, so make it your target. That is the Writing score your university or regulator asks for, whichever test you book. Each rewrite then shows your own answer at that band, so you know what to aim for.

  2. Write the tasks your test has.

IELTS Online is Academic, so type Academic Task 1 chart reports and Task 2 essays, the way the online test runs, and time each one with the practice timer.

  3. Fix your lowest criterion first.

Begin with your lowest criterion and its labeled corrections. Check your recent Task 1 and Task 2 bands before you book, at home or at a test center.

05 / What VoyaLang does

What VoyaLang does for IELTS Online test takers, and what it does not.

VoyaLang does
VoyaLang checks Academic Task 1 chart reports, Task 2 essays (bring your own question if you like) and General Training letters of 11 types. You type your answers, as in IELTS Online, and get a band for each of the four criteria, every mistake fixed and labeled, and a rewrite at your target band. Time each task with the practice timer, and count down to your test day.
VoyaLang does not
Nothing it gives is an official IELTS result, and it has no band for the whole Writing test. It does not cover Listening, Reading or Speaking, or other tests such as TOEFL. It does not book IELTS Online or a test center, check what a university accepts for you, or give advice on visas or applications.
FAQ

Questions about IELTS Online.

What is IELTS Online?

It is IELTS Academic taken on your own computer, at home or in another private room with a stable internet connection. Listening, Reading and Writing work as in IELTS on computer, and the Speaking test is a video call with an IELTS examiner.

Is IELTS Online accepted for immigration?

Not by the visa offices on our pages. Australia and New Zealand want a test taken at a test center, Canada's Express Entry takes only General Training, and UK visas take only IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills. IELTS itself points visa and immigration test takers to a test center.

Can I take IELTS General Training online?

No. IELTS Online is only the Academic test. If you need General Training, for Canada's Express Entry for example, book it at a test center.

How long do IELTS Online results take?

IELTS says 6 to 8 days after your test. Trained IELTS examiners mark every test.

Is IELTS Online accepted by UK universities?

Many take it: King's College London, Imperial, LSE, Warwick, Bristol, and Edinburgh for postgraduate study. The University of Manchester does not. Below degree level, a Student visa needs an approved test such as IELTS for UKVI, taken at a test center.

Can I use One Skill Retake after IELTS Online?

No. IELTS lists One Skill Retake only for a full IELTS on computer test taken at a test center that offers it. After IELTS Online, you would book a full test again.
