02 / Your case

All four scores on one test report

All four scores must be on one test report. So one weak Writing day can cost you the whole test, even with 8 in Speaking and Listening. AITSL accepts One Skill Retake, so you can retake only Writing within 60 days of an IELTS on computer test.

Good classroom English is not the same as IELTS Writing. Task 1 is a report on a chart, and Task 2 is an argued essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. VoyaLang helps with Writing only, not with the 8s in Speaking and Listening.

  • AITSL is the skills check for your visa. Before you teach in a school, also ask your state or territory teacher regulator if it asks for its own English proof.
  • Your visa points may need different scores.
03 / Why Writing

For teachers moving to Australia, Writing often holds the band back.

AITSL asks for at least 7 in Writing, and in IELTS's own 2024-2025 Academic data, Writing had the lowest average of the four skills. IELTS test taker performance data, 2024-2025.

One Skill Retake: accepted by AITSL. IELTS offers it once per test, within 60 days of an IELTS on computer test.

04 / Your plan

A Writing plan for teachers moving to Australia.

  1. Set your target band.

Set your target at the Writing band AITSL asks of teachers. For AITSL, that is 7 in Writing. Your rewrite then shows your own answer at that band, the way you might show a class a strong answer.

  2. Write the tasks your test has.

Set yourself the two Academic tasks, a Task 1 chart report and a Task 2 essay, and let the practice timer keep you to time.

  3. Fix your lowest criterion first.

Start with your weak spot: the lowest criterion and its labeled corrections. All four scores sit on one report, so compare your recent Task 1 and Task 2 bands before you book.

05 / What VoyaLang does

What VoyaLang does for teachers moving to Australia, and what it does not.

VoyaLang does
Three kinds of answer get checked: Academic Task 1 chart reports, Task 2 essays (on a question of your own too) and General Training letters of 11 types. Like good marking, each answer gets a band for each of the four criteria, every mistake fixed with a label, and a rewrite at the band you set. You can time your tasks and keep a countdown to your exam date.
VoyaLang does not
It does not give you an official IELTS score, and it does not join your task bands into one Writing band. It does not help with Listening, Reading or Speaking, or with tests such as PTE or TOEFL. It does not book your test, lodge your AITSL application, or give migration advice.
FAQ

Questions about IELTS for teachers moving to Australia.

Can I use PTE or TOEFL for AITSL?

No. AITSL accepts only IELTS Academic. It says it does not accept PTE, TOEFL or any other English test.

Does AITSL accept One Skill Retake?

Yes. AITSL says it accepts IELTS One Skill Retake. IELTS offers it only after an IELTS on computer test, once per test, within 60 days.

How old can my IELTS result be for AITSL?

The test must be from the 3 years before you apply, and all four scores must be on one test report form.

Does AITSL accept IELTS Online?

No. AITSL does not accept IELTS Online or IELTS Indicator. It takes IELTS Academic on paper or on computer at an IELTS test center.

Can I skip IELTS if I studied in English?

Maybe. AITSL accepts at least 4 full years of university study (or the part-time equivalent) in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the US instead. It counts only finished qualifications of at least 1 year of full-time study, at the level of an Australian bachelor's degree or higher. The 4 years must include your teacher education qualification, and all of that qualification, supervised teaching practice included, must be done in these countries. Read the details on the AITSL page.

I teach IELTS. Is this page for me?

Probably not. This page is for school teachers who need an AITSL skills assessment to move to Australia. If you teach IELTS and want to use VoyaLang with your students, see our page For teachers.
