02 / Your case

Not every UK visa tests Writing

Settlement (ILR) and British citizenship need B1 in speaking and listening, or a degree taught in English. The first family visa needs A1 in speaking and listening. None of these test Writing.

  • Nurses, midwives, doctors and dentists: if your regulator accepted your English test, the Health and Care Worker visa needs no new one.
  • gov.uk lists care worker and senior care worker jobs (codes 6135 and 6136) only for people extending, updating or switching to a Health and Care Worker visa. If you switch from a different visa, you must have worked legally in the job for your sponsor for at least 3 months. Check your English rule there.
  • Some people need no test: nationals of listed countries, such as Canada or the US, people with a degree taught in English, and vets whose English the RCVS accepted.
  • IELTS for UKVI levels: B1 is 4.0, B2 is 5.5 and C1 is 7.0 in each part.

03 / Why Writing

For a UK work visa, Writing often holds the band back.

IELTS for UKVI comes in Academic and General Training, and in IELTS's own 2024-2025 data, Writing had the lowest average of the four skills in Academic and the second lowest in General Training, after Reading. IELTS test taker performance data, 2024-2025.

One Skill Retake: IELTS says UKVI accepts it for IELTS on computer in selected locations. gov.uk says that in some cases you may be allowed to take a failed part again, and that you need to check the test provider's terms and conditions before you book a test.

04 / Your plan

A Writing plan for a UK work visa.

  1. Set your target band.

Set your target to the Writing band your visa needs. For a new Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa, that is 5.5 in Writing. Each check then rewrites your answer at that band, with your ideas kept.

  2. Write the tasks your test has.

Pick Academic or General Training, then practice its Task 1, a chart report or a letter, and Task 2 essays, with the practice timer on.

  3. Fix your lowest criterion first.

Each part needs the same level, so put your lowest criterion first and use its labeled corrections. Before you book IELTS for UKVI, look over your recent Task 1 and Task 2 bands.

05 / What VoyaLang does

What VoyaLang does for a UK work visa, and what it does not.

VoyaLang does
VoyaLang checks Academic Task 1 chart reports, General Training letters (11 types in 3 tones) and Task 2 essays, also when you paste in a question of your own. For each one you get a band for each of the four criteria, plus labeled fixes for your mistakes and a rewrite at your target band. Set the practice timer for a task when you want, and keep an eye on the countdown to your exam.
VoyaLang does not
An official IELTS score comes only from IELTS, and VoyaLang gives no single band for the whole Writing test either. It does not check Listening, Reading or Speaking, or any other approved English test. It does not book IELTS for UKVI, apply for your visa, or give immigration advice.
FAQ

Questions about IELTS for a UK work visa.

Which IELTS do I need for a UK work visa?

IELTS for UKVI, Academic or General Training, booked at an approved IELTS for UKVI test center. For a new Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa, you need at least 5.5 in each part, which is level B2.

Can I use normal IELTS for a Skilled Worker visa?

Not as your visa test. gov.uk accepts IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills as approved tests, and a work visa needs all four skills, so book IELTS for UKVI.

Is IELTS Online accepted for a UK work visa?

No. A UK visa needs a test from gov.uk's list of approved English tests, taken at an approved test location. For IELTS, that is IELTS for UKVI, or IELTS Life Skills for routes that test only speaking and listening.

Do I need a new English test to extend my Skilled Worker visa?

Not if you had the visa before 8 January 2026. gov.uk says you need level B1, and you do not need to prove your English again when you extend or update it.

Do I need IELTS Writing for ILR or British citizenship?

No. Settlement and citizenship need B1 in speaking and listening, or a degree taught in English. Writing is not tested for these routes.

How long is IELTS for UKVI valid?

gov.uk says results from an approved English test are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded.

Can I combine two IELTS for UKVI results?

No. gov.uk says all the scores you need must come from one test with the same provider. In some cases, if you failed one part, you may be allowed to take that part again. gov.uk says to check the test provider's terms and conditions before you book a test.
