IELTS Writing Task 2: double question

Why are some people resistant to adopting new technologies? What can be done to help people who struggle with technology in their daily lives?

The answer

A Band 6 essay.

Band 6272 words

In the modern world, technology is changing very fast and new apps and machines appear every year. However, some people do not want to use them and they prefer the old way of doing things. There are several reasons for this, and there are also some ways to help these people.

Firstly, the main reason is fear, especially for older people. Many of them are afraid of making mistakes, they think that if they press the wrong button on a bank app they will lose all their money. Because of this, they do not feel confidence with technology and they prefer to go to bank and talk with a real person. Last year my grandmother try to pay her bills online, but she gave up after ten minutes. Moreover, new devices are often expensive and not everyone can buy the newest phone. Furthermore, some people are not interested on new things and my grandfather don't see any benefit in changing his habits.

Secondly, there are some things we can do to help them. The government and local libraries can organize free classes, so older people can make a course near their home. Also, young people in the family can give them advices and show them step by step how to use a smartphone. In my opinion, this is the best way, because they trust their family more than a teacher.

In conclusion, people resist new technology because of fear, money and old habits. In my view, families have the biggest role. If we help them with patience, they can comunicate with their family and enjoy the benefits of technology like everybody else.

Why this band

Band 6 essay, criterion by criterion.

Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the essay: the words each note quotes.

Task ResponseBand 6
Both questions are answered: why people resist technology and how to help them. The reasons have short examples about the writer's grandparents, but the help part is shorter, and the view that families help most is stated, not argued. The idea about cost is only named.
Coherence and CohesionBand 6
The answer has a clear plan, but Firstly, Secondly, Moreover and Furthermore are used in a mechanical way. In "this is the best way", it is not clear which idea "this" refers to.
Lexical ResourceBand 5
Most words are everyday ones, and "technology" is repeated often, so the range is narrow. There are many slips, like "make a course" and "feel confidence", and spelling mistakes such as "comunicate".
Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 6
Most sentences are simple or joined with and. Errors are common, for example "my grandfather don't see" and "give them advices". A comma joins sentences that should be separate in the paragraph about fear.
One change

One change that makes this essay stronger.

Before

Moreover, new devices are often expensive and not everyone can buy the newest phone.

After

Moreover, new devices are often expensive, so a retired person may keep an old phone that cannot run the apps that banks and doctors now use.

The idea is now explained, not just named.
