What the discussion question asks.
It is sometimes acceptable to tell a lie if it prevents someone from being hurt. Others say honesty must always come first. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
A Band 8 essay.
Few people get through a week without a small lie, usually told to spare someone's feelings. While some see these lies as a harmless kindness, others argue that honesty should never be sacrificed. I believe honesty should be the default, and a lie is justified only when the truth would hurt without helping.
The case for protective lies is strongest in trivial, emotional situations. When my neighbor's young son proudly served a birthday cake that had collapsed in the oven, she told him it was the best she had ever tasted. The truth would have spoiled the evening and taught him nothing that practice would not. In moments like this, honesty serves no purpose, and insisting in it can look more like coldness than integrity.
However, most so-called kind lies protect the teller rather than the listener. A manager who praises weak work to avoid an awkward conversation may feel considerate, but the employee loses the chance to improve. A former colleague of mine was told for years that his reports were fine, and only learned otherwise when he was passed over for promotion. In the long run, that silence did far more damage than benefit, because it took away a decision that was rightfully his.
For this reason, the useful question is not whether a truth is painful, but whether the listener can act on it. A diagnosis, a financial risk or a failing relationship all call for honesty, delivered with care and at the right moment. A collapsed birthday cake, on the other hand, does not. Telling them apart takes judgment, but for the most people it quickly becomes instinctive.
In short, kindness and honesty are rarely in real conflict. Most truths can be told gently, and the rare acceptable lie is one that protects feelings without taking away anyone's choices.

Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the essay: the words each note quotes.
- Task ResponseBand 7
- The position is clear and precise: honesty first, with a narrow space for kind lies. Both views are explained with specific examples, the collapsed cake and the colleague's reports. The writer's own test, whether the listener can act on the truth, links everything together and could be developed a little further.
- Coherence and CohesionBand 8
- Paragraphs build on each other, and the cake example returns in a later paragraph to support the argument. Linking is mostly natural, as in "For this reason" and "In short".
- Lexical ResourceBand 8
- Vocabulary is precise, for example "spare someone's feelings" and "instinctive". There are small slips in "more damage than benefit" and "for the most people".
- Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 8
- Complex sentences are used with ease, including clauses with who and that, and past forms like "would have spoiled". There are only small slips, such as "insisting in it".
