IELTS Writing Task 2: discussion question

It is sometimes acceptable to tell a lie if it prevents someone from being hurt. Others say honesty must always come first. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The answer

A Band 6 essay.

Band 6267 words

In our daily life, people sometimes do not say the truth to protect the feelings of others. Some people think this kind of lie is acceptible, but others believe we must be honest in every situation. In this essay I will look at both opinions, and I will explain why I think small lies are sometimes better than the truth.

Firstly, many people beleive that a small lie can protect someone from pain. For example, if a friend cooks dinner for you and the food is not tasty, most people still says it is delicious. They do not want to make their friend to feel sad. Moreover, sometimes the truth can be very hurtful, for instance for a person with a serious illness. In my country, many families hide bad news from a sick grandparent, and people see it as kind of love.

Secondly, other people argue that honest is one of the most important value in a relationship. If a person lies once, it is difficult to trust him again, the friendship is never the same. For example, many people feel angry and hurt about a lie from their partner, even a small one. Furthermore, this can deceive a friendship and small lies often become bigger lies.

In conclusion, both views have good points, but in my opinion a small lie is acceptable to protect somebody. However, everybody have to be honest about serious things like money or work, because the truth always comes out at the end. So it is important to think carefully before we say something that is not true to our friends.

Why this band

Band 6 essay, criterion by criterion.

Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the essay: the words each note quotes.

Task ResponseBand 6
Both views are discussed, each with a simple example, and the writer's opinion is given in the introduction and the conclusion. The view for honesty is shorter and less developed, and the idea that small lies become bigger lies is only named.
Coherence and CohesionBand 6
The essay follows a simple plan, and each paragraph has a clear main idea. Firstly, Secondly, Moreover and Furthermore are used in a mechanical way. In "this can deceive a friendship", it is not clear what "this" refers to.
Lexical ResourceBand 6
Some topic words fit, like "serious illness", but most words are everyday ones, and "lie" is repeated many times. Some words are used in the wrong way, such as "say the truth" and "deceive a friendship", and there are spelling mistakes like "beleive".
Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 6
Most sentences are short and simple, with a few if and because clauses. Errors appear often, like "everybody have to" and "make their friend to feel". A comma also joins sentences that should be separate in the paragraph about trust.
One change

One change that makes this essay stronger.

Before

Furthermore, this can deceive a friendship and small lies often become bigger lies.

After

Furthermore, a small lie often needs another lie to hide it, and slowly the friendship loses its trust.

The idea is now explained, not just named, and "this" is replaced with clear words.
