How cities keep cool

AOn a summer afternoon, a large city can be several degrees warmer than the farmland around it. Roads and roofs soak up heat all day and give it back slowly at night.

BPlanners now treat street trees as part of a city's cooling. Their shade keeps streets cooler, and the water they release cools the air around them.

Read the notice and decide. Then open each answer to see the words it rests on.

Greenfield Library: changes from 1 March

From 1 March the library will open at 8 am on weekdays, an hour earlier than now, so that students can study before their classes begin. Closing time stays the same.

The two study rooms on the first floor can now be booked online up to a week ahead. Each booking lasts two hours, and a room that is still empty 15 minutes after the booking starts is offered to the next person waiting.

Members can still borrow up to ten items at a time. E-books now count toward this limit, and they can be borrowed from home through the library app.

Do the statements below agree with the information in the notice? Answer TRUE if the statement agrees, FALSE if it contradicts the notice, or NOT GIVEN if there is no information on it.

  1. 1From 1 March the library will close later on weekdays.

Show the answer to statement 1

FALSE Only the opening time changes. The notice says closing time stays the same, which contradicts a later close.

    Closing time stays the same.
  2. 2A study room can be booked seven days before it is needed.

Show the answer to statement 2

TRUE A week is seven days, and up to a week ahead includes seven days ahead, so the statement agrees with the notice.

can now be booked online up to a week ahead
  3. 3Most members prefer e-books to printed books.

Show the answer to statement 3

NOT GIVEN The notice says how e-books are borrowed, but nothing about which kind members prefer, so there is no information on it.

E-books now count toward this limit, and they can be borrowed from home through the library app.

Your band, every answer explained, and what to practice next.

A full test ends with your band, from the same tables as our IELTS Reading band score calculator. A single part shows your score out of its questions.

Then go through the review: every question with your answer, the right one, the words in the text that prove it and why. Your weakest question type comes with parts that ask it, so your next practice goes where it counts.

With a free account, History keeps every result with its review, and your dashboard shows your band over time and your weakest question types.

FAQ

Reading test questions.

Are these real IELTS Reading tests?

No. They are practice tests made for VoyaLang in the IELTS format: three parts, 40 questions, the same question types and 60 minutes. The long passages are adapted from openly licensed articles, with the source credited under each one, and the short everyday texts are written for practice.

What is the difference between Academic and General Training Reading?

Academic Reading has three long passages of the kind found in books, journals and magazines. General Training starts with short everyday texts, such as notices, adverts and workplace documents, and ends with one longer text. Both have 40 questions in 60 minutes, and VoyaLang has 134 full tests across the two, so pick the one you will sit.

How is my IELTS Reading band worked out?

Each right answer is one mark out of 40, and a full test turns your marks into a band with the same tables as our Reading band score calculator, one for Academic and one for General Training. The number of marks needed changes a little between real test versions, so read the band as an estimate. A single part shows your score, not a band. IELTS Reading band score calculator

Can I practice one question type at a time?

Yes. Instead of a full test, take one part, and pick it by question type, part number and level. After each test or part you see how you did on every question type, so you know which one to practice next.

Is the reading test timed?

A full test has the exam's 60 minutes for all three parts. A single part has 20 minutes, and you can turn its timer off to practice without a time limit. Before you finish, the test tells you how many questions are still unanswered or flagged.

Can I stop a reading test and finish it later?

Yes, on the same device and browser. Your answers, highlights, notes, flags and the time left are kept in that browser until you hand the test in or sign out, so you can close the page and come back.

How do I see my reading progress?

With a free account. History keeps every reading result with its full review, and the dashboard shows your band over time and how often you get each question type right, weakest first.
