What the table task asks.
The table below shows average house prices (in thousands of US dollars) and price-to-income ratios in five cities in 2023. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
| City | Avg price ($k) | Avg income ($k) | Price/income ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong | 1,250 | 48 | 26 |
| Sydney | 820 | 62 | 13.2 |
| London | 680 | 55 | 12.4 |
| New York | 750 | 72 | 10.4 |
| Tokyo | 510 | 58 | 8.8 |
A Band 7 report.
The table shows average house prices and average yearly incomes in five major cities in 2023, together with the ratio between the two.
Overall, Hong Kong was by far the most expensive and least affordable city. In contrast, Tokyo was the most economical city for buyers. It is also clear that high incomes did not always mean high prices.
In Hong Kong, an average house cost about 1.25 million dollars, roughly two and a half times the price in Tokyo. As the average income there was only 48,000 dollars, the lowest of five cities, the ratio reached 26. Sydney had second highest prices, 820,000 dollars, and the second highest ratio, 13.2.
London and New York were in the middle, with ratios of 12.4 and 10.4. The prices in New York was higher than in London (750,000 against 680,000 dollars), but incomes there were the highest at 72,000, so houses were more affordable. Tokyo had the lowest ratio of only 8.8, even though incomes there (58,000 dollars) were lower than in Sydney and New York.
Band 7 report, criterion by criterion.
Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the report: the words each note quotes.
- Task AchievementBand 7
- The overview gives the big picture in a few sentences before the details, and the report picks the most useful figures instead of listing every number. The point about New York could link its high income to its lower ratio more clearly.
- Coherence and CohesionBand 7
- The report moves from the most expensive cities to the cheapest one, which is a sensible order. Phrases like "In contrast" and "even though" connect the comparisons.
- Lexical ResourceBand 6
- Words for comparison are used, such as "by far" and "roughly two and a half times", but the range of chart words is small. "Most economical" is less precise than most affordable.
- Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 7
- The report uses a range of structures, including clauses with as, but and even though. There are a few errors, for example "The prices in New York was" and "Sydney had second highest prices".
One change that makes this report stronger.
In contrast, Tokyo was the most economical city for buyers.
In contrast, Tokyo had both the lowest prices and the lowest price-to-income ratio.
The overview now says exactly how Tokyo was different, and the unnatural word is gone.
