A Band 7 report.
The bar chart shows the recycling rates of five materials in the Netherlands in 2005 and 2022, while the table shows the total amount of waste and how it was treated.
Overall, recycling rates rose for every material and the share of all waste that was recycled more than doubled, even though the country produced more waste. At the same time, much less waste went to the landfill.
Paper was the most popular material for recycling in both years, rising from 45% to 72%. Glass and metal followed a similar pattern, with glass almost doubling from 35% to 68% and metal increasing from 40% to 65%. Plastic had the lowest rate, but it still went up from only 8% to 28%. Organic waste also saw a big rise, from 15% to 48%.
According to the table, the total waste increased from 35 to 42 million tons. However, the proportion of waste sent to landfill were much lower in 2022, falling from 62% to 25%. In contrast, recyling went up from 22% to 48% and incineration from 16% to 27%, so recycling became the most common method.
