What the line graph task asks.
The line graph below shows average monthly temperatures (in degrees Celsius) in Cairo, London, Moscow and Singapore over a year. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
- Cairo
- London
- Moscow
- Singapore
A Band 7 report.
The line graph compares four cities, Cairo, London, Moscow and Singapore, in terms of their average temperature in each month of the year.
Overall, Singapore was hot all year with almost no change, while the other three cities were much warmer in summer than in winter. Moscow had the biggest difference between the seasons and it was the only city with temperatures below zero.
The temperature in Singapore was 27 or 28 degrees in every month. Cairo was cooler than Singapore in winter but hotter in summer. Its temprature rose steadily from 14 degrees in January to a peak of 31 degrees in July and August, before falling to 15 degrees in December.
London and Moscow followed a similar pattern, but they were much colder. London started at 5 degrees in January, reached 19 degrees in July and August and returned to 5 degrees in the end of the year. Moscow was the coldest city in winter, with minus 8 degrees in January. In spring its temperature increased strongly, and in July it reached 20 degrees, slightly higher than London. After that, it was dropped to minus 5 degrees in December.
Band 7 report, criterion by criterion.
Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the report: the words each note quotes.
- Task AchievementBand 7
- The report gives a clear overview before any details, so the reader sees the big picture straight away. The main features are covered and the figures match the chart. Some details are listed month by month instead of being grouped.
- Coherence and CohesionBand 7
- The report groups the cities in a sensible way, with Singapore and Cairo together and London and Moscow together. Words like "Its" and "After that" make the order easy to follow.
- Lexical ResourceBand 6
- The answer uses good words for trends, such as "rose steadily", "a peak" and "falling". A few choices are less natural, like "increased strongly", and "temprature" is misspelled.
- Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 7
- Sentences are varied and mostly correct, with comparisons such as cooler and hotter. There are a few errors, for example "it was dropped".
One change that makes this report stronger.
London and Moscow followed a similar pattern, but they were much colder.
London and Moscow followed the same seasonal shape as Cairo, with warm summers and cold winters, but at much lower temperatures.
The comparison now links the cities instead of describing them one by one.
