IELTS General Training Task 1: formal letter

You are planning to visit an English-speaking country and would like information about sightseeing tours.

Write a letter to a tourist information office. In your letter:

  1. say when you plan to visit and for how long
  2. describe what kind of tours you are interested in
  3. ask about prices and booking arrangements
The answer

A Band 7 letter.

Band 7171 words

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am contacting your office to request some information about sightseeing tours. My wife and I are planning to visit New Zealand next year, and we would like to make profit of our stay.

We will arrive to Auckland on March 12 and stay for ten days. As it is our first visit, we would prefer organized tours rather than traveling around on our own.

We are particularly interested in day trips to lakes, national parks and small traditional villages. My wife is also keen on the history, so a guided walk around the old part of the city would be ideal.

I would be greatful if you could send me a list of tours with their prices. I would also like to know whether we need to book in advance or if we can buy tickets after we will arrive. Finally, please let me know if there are any discounts for booking several tours together.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Daniel Moreau

Why this band

Band 7 letter, criterion by criterion.

Each band is the one our checker gave. Underlined in the letter: the words each note quotes.

Task AchievementBand 7
Every part of the task is covered: the dates and length of the visit, the kind of tours, and questions about prices and booking. The purpose is clear from the opening sentence, and details like the guided walk make the request specific.
Coherence and CohesionBand 8
Each paragraph has a clear job, and the letter moves in the same order as the task. Phrases like "I would also like to know" and "Finally" link the questions smoothly.
Lexical ResourceBand 6
The tone is formal and polite all the way through, and the tour words fit. But some word partners are wrong, such as "make profit of our stay" and "arrive to Auckland", and "greatful" is misspelled.
Grammatical Range and AccuracyBand 6
The letter uses a range of structures, including if clauses and indirect questions with whether. But some forms are wrong, for example "after we will arrive" and "keen on the history".
One change

One change that makes this letter stronger.

Before

My wife and I are planning to visit New Zealand next year, and we would like to make profit of our stay.

After

My wife and I are planning to visit New Zealand next year, and we would like to make the most of our stay.

The phrase is now natural, so the opening reads smoothly.
